BIG SLURP

DESTINY OF THE UNIVERSE – 5

The name can remind a funny brand of milkshakes, but this model, also called False Vacuum, assumes vacuum in the Universe, is not a true vacuum but, indeed, a false vacuum. This means it would not really be at the minimum possible energy state, and therefore stable, but in an apparent stability that could be lost at any moment.

If this happened, the Universe could completely change its nature and its physical constants, shaking the foundations of matter, energy and space-time, if not destroying everything instantly, without any warning. Heart-warming, isn't it? The Universe could, at any moment, disappear, and us with it.

Quantum mechanics, in opposition to general reality, however, do not admit vacuum, as the total absence of space-time is never possible, but sustains there are always regions of the Planck Length, the minimum length that makes scientific sense, which are crossed by quantum fluctuations. Since the fluctuations are extremely small and particles in them annihilate each other, the empty space instead appears to us as empty indeed.

These formations are sometimes in a false vacuum, giving to space-time a bubbling and continuous structure, but impossible to tear or destroy, even for dark energy. As a result, the sudden self-destruction of the Universe shouldn't be possible.

The Big Slurp would change instantly the nature of the Universe
